I use the Deep South Drop shot rod. Very important to get one designed to DS. I use it all year long. Its great when fishing gets tough. _________________ Roy

I've got a Loomis GLX drop shot rod and I really like the regular Loomis drop shot rod better. I think the GLX is a bit on the fast side for drop shotting. I've also used the Shimano Crucials and those are nice.
I'm not sure what you mean by how long this time of year, but like Roy, I use the drop shot all year. I'll change a few things up with it depending on the time of year though. _________________

Not sure what kinda money you were looking to spend, but my favorite drop shot rod is the Loomis 820. I honestly like the regular better than the GLX model. Drop shot is one technique that you really need a quality rod to do. I think the ds is best extreme heat or extreme cold, but it will work any time of year (especially in high pressured water....). _________________ Fish ain't got arms, legs, elbows, or pockets so if you feel a thump, cross his eyes!!! |

I start with about 18". I like it being off the bottom. It alos gives me a little extra for breakoffs. By time day ends it might only be 6" left below hook. I use the #2 or # 4 Owner mosquitto hook. 6 or 8lb line. _________________ Roy

this is useful starting point too ^ (what roym wrote) spinning rod med light to med action..its all in how much you want to spend... you might want to go to stores that have different d/s rods and get some feedback from workers on what guys are using or talking about too..
i think almost everyone makes one now days it now becomes preference.. you can look and see if anyone has one for sale.. (i think sean rallysport has one for sale)
id try that first then your not spending full price right out of the gates and have something your not liking... |

Loomis is very good love them...but they are very expensive. If you don't drop shot a lot then I would look for something a little more frugal. My Daiwa VIP less than 100.00 works fine. You need to remember you get what you pay for! I do like the longer rods. 6'9" I think is good. I use 6 lb P-Line xtra tuff stuff with a 6 lb Tatsu leader material for toona. |

Hey Swin,
I went back and found this pic. The fish was caught at Wedowee on a DS rig with a tiny fluke. The fished weighed 4.10lb on 6lb line. DS can catch a good fish for you.

The drop shot will suprise you from time to time, that is for sure. I'd say over the last few years I have caught more 5+ lb fish on the drop shot than almost anything else.
Something I didn't meniton, is that I have multiple rods I use for drop shotting. The 820 (and similar actioned rods) will be good for finesse style drop shotting. BUT, you can power fish a drop shot (man shotting, as I like to call it), and that may suprise you as well _________________

I think Skeet Reese has a DS model in his series of rods for $90. I don't own one, but curious if anybody has tried one out.

Most of the time I will use my shakey head rod (the heavier Loomis shakey head model) with 8 to 10 pound line. I go with the rebarb hook in a 2/0 or 3/0 (straight shank hook) and will use a full size senko, trick worm, brush hog, ect. Usually I will use it if I want to try and fish a bigger worm and bigger hook, to target bigger fish. It works well on Allatoona, but it is my prefered drop shot method on lakes that are full of largemouth. But, I think my favorite part of it is simply getting to set the hook. With the straight shank hook, I rig it weedless (like you would rig a texas rig worm), so when you get a bite, you can haul off and jerk the snot out of it.
It does work better around brush also, since your hook point is not exposed. For a while though, I was using it in place of a shakey head. When I would fish tournaments as a co-angler, it was my go to rig if my boater was finesse fishing with a small texas rig or shakey head.
I have gone all the way up to a medium heavy jig rod, 17lb line and the BMF hooks. Usually I stick with the shakey head rod, but if the cover is heavy enough, I'll step up the equiptment. _________________
